In the photo are Darryl Nicholas (with Mayoral chain) and (left to right) Franceska Anderson; Ann Etheridge, who teaches at Brixington; Mrs Linda Castle, a teacher at Withycombe Primary School; and Caitlin McKay.

Students from schools in Exmouth were invited to send in pictures showing what they like and dislike about Exmouth now, and what they would like to see as improvements in Exmouth. These ideas have all helped in the Masterplanning process. There were two prizes – one for the best individual entry and one for the school that submitted the most entries. The judges could not decide between entries from Franceska Anderson (10) from Brixington Primary School and 11-year-old Caitlin McKay, a pupil at St Joseph’s Primary School. So they split the £100 prize vouchers into two and gave £50 to each girl. Both would like to see an aqua park with several pools and a water slide.

Now that a set of common Aims and Objectives have been established through engagement with community representatives, Exmouth needs a clear Vision that describes the sort of place the town will be if those Aims are delivered and the Objectives are met. A clear vision will ensure that all the different initiatives and plans for the town are moving in the same direction, supporting each other towards common goals. Together, the Vision, Aims and Objectives represent the outcome for Exmouth. All emerging development plans and proposals will need to be evaluated against these three and only plans and proposals that make a positive contribution towards achieving them should be considered.

Through consultation we have prepared a Vision statement for the town. Thank you to all of you who have attended workshops or filled out the Questionnaire which have helped to prepare the Vision. Click here to see some of the results of the Questionnaire.

We would like your thoughts and comments on the Vision statement. Please click here to view the statement and then leave any comments or ideas you have below.

The first stage in preparing the Masterplan for the town centre is to make sure we have a clear vision for Exmouth’s future. This is important as it will influence what the town needs, where it should be located, and what it should look like. If we know the vision, we can ensure that any proposals for development or change will help to move Exmouth forward.

Visions and objectives for Exmouth have been proposed before, and in fact the community is currently drafting a new set. It is not our intention to start from scratch but to draw on the views that have already been expressed in an attempt to establish a way forward that everyone can agree with.

So we have held a number of consultation events with community representatives, landowners and leaseholders to help inform this vision and to agree a set of Aims for Exmouth. Under each Aim we have worked with Consultees to draft a set of Objectives – the things Exmouth needs to do if it is to achieve those Aims.

The Aims and draft Objectives are posted on this website, together with a collection of ‘postcards from 2035’ written by community representatives from the future Exmouth. We also asked those who attended the consultations where they would locate potential town centre land uses and the resulting rough sketch plans for the town centre are attached.

There is still an opportunity for you to contribute by filling out an online Questionnaire. So, let us know what you think? In 25 years time, Exmouth is likely to feel a bit different, have better prospects and offer some new opportunities. We hope it will have a great reputation, but what should it be reputed for? And please let us know if you have any comments on the draft Objectives. Please submit the questionnaire or comments on Objectives before the 9th April 2010.
